# A Birmingham Repairer Sets Out to Catalogue Every Film Camera Made

Pierro Pozella runs PPP Cameras, a Birmingham repair and processing business, and appears as a camera restorer on the BBC's *The Repair Shop*. He has now launched Camera Index at cameraindex.co.uk, a reference site working toward a single aim: an entry for every film camera ever made. It opened with more than 1,400 cameras from manufacturers beginning with A — Agfa, Ansco, Alpa, Argus — each carrying a thumbnail image generated by software Pozella wrote himself, according to Kosmo Foto, which interviewed him for the launch.

Pozella told Kosmo Foto the project comes directly out of how he works and how he thinks: "I'm genuinely obsessed with cameras. They're my special interest, my job and passion." He is autistic, and said the format is a deliberate response to that: "Being autistic, I need information to be clear and concise — so that I'm able to process it." He plans to extend the site beyond cameras to lenses and accessories, and eventually to add repair information and retailer listings to individual entries.

Existing camera references tend to be one of two things: a wiki assembled by volunteers at whatever pace they show up, or a collector's personal list that stops growing when its author does. A repairer's database has a different kind of authority behind it — Pozella's information comes from having the cameras in hand, not from compiling what other sites already say about them. Whether Camera Index reaches beyond A is a question only time will answer; Kosmo Foto's interview is the only independent account of the project so far, and the site's build-out past its opening letter could not be confirmed beyond what Pozella described to them.
