Shoten, the Japanese mount-adapter specialist, put its first Tribute-series lens on sale on 30 September: the Tribute 01, a 50mm f/1.1 modeled on the Zunow 50mm f/1.1 of the 1950s. It is a Leica thread-mount (L39) lens with a removable ring that adapts it to M mount, so it fits screw-mount Leicas and their copies as well as M bodies. Shoten lists it at ¥142,000 including tax, in black or silver, through its own online store and on eBay. It was developed with an independent lens maker who works under the name Chūkyōshi DJ.

The barrel is small for the aperture: about 62 mm across and 44.5 mm long without the mount, 308 g, with a 52 mm filter thread and 13 aperture blades running from f/1.1 to f/16.

The figure that matters most on a film camera is the rangefinder coupling. It runs from infinity to 0.7 m, and Shoten notes that the exact limit varies by camera. The lens focuses on to 0.5 m, but the last 20 centimeters are scale focusing: the rangefinder patch stops following.

At the closest coupled distance the margin is thin. Wide open at 0.7 m, using the common 0.03 mm circle of confusion for 35mm, total depth of field comes to roughly 13 mm, about half an inch. A rangefinder whose calibration is slightly off, or a body that leans an inch while the shutter is pressed, puts the plane of focus somewhere other than the eye. That is the ordinary condition of any f/1.1 lens on a rangefinder, not a fault of this one, and it is the reason the coupling figure is worth more attention than the aperture.
