# Getting Started with Large Format: What a First 4×5 Actually Requires

Picture this. A photographer has been behind their camera for ten minutes and has not made a single picture. The camera is a 4×5 view camera on a heavy tripod, set up in the center aisle of a working greenhouse — glass overhead, wet brick underfoot, benches of seedlings receding forty feet. Under the dark cloth she moves a loupe across the ground glass, corner to corner. The image is upside down and reversed, and the glass roof holds reflections that were not in the scene a minute ago. She checks the corners twice, slides a film holder into the back, pulls the dark slide, and waits for the ventilation fans to cycle off — the bench she focused on trembles while they run. One click, a half-second long. She turns the slide black side out, writes four lines in a notebook, and starts packing up. One sheet. One exposure. One negative the size of a person's palm.

To the uninitiated, large format looks like a great deal of work for one photograph. And it is. That is the correct framing to use when considering if large format might be a worthwhile avenue to explore. That should be the first question, not which camera to buy. It is whether this is how you want to work.

## What changes

A 4×5 sheet has roughly thirteen times the area of a 35mm frame, and detail, tonal gradation, and enlargement headroom scale with it. A well-exposed sheet can be contact-printed as a small finished photograph or scanned and printed at sizes that strain smaller film.

The deeper change is in the making. A small camera bundles framing, focus, and exposure into one gesture at the eye. A view camera separates them into distinct steps, performed in order, on a camera that, usually, stands on a tripod. Composition happens on a ground-glass screen, inverted and reversed, usually under a dark cloth. Focus is set by moving the lens or the back and confirmed with a magnifier. Exposure is metered by hand, because the camera contains no meter, and set by hand on the lens. The film went into its holders one sheet at a time, in darkness, before the photographer left the house. And where a roll of film receives one development for every frame on it, a sheet is developed in individually (or in individual batches), a difference that matters more the further into the format you go.

Each exposure also carries more weight. A holder holds two sheets. A day's work might be six or twelve. A procedural mistake — a slide pulled at the wrong moment, a shutter left open on its viewing setting, a holder inserted before focus was final — costs a sheet of film and its processing. Black-and-white sheet film runs a few dollars per sheet in 2026; color runs considerably more.

## The system, not the camera

A view camera is a light-tight bellows between two standards. That’s it. It returns you to photography’s basic building blocks. A light-tight box with a small aperture and material to capture the light that travels into it.

The front standard carries the lens. The rear standard carries the ground glass and accepts the film holder. There is no meter, no film transport, and no shutter except the one built into each lens. The body does nothing by itself, and a beginner who buys only the body has bought an ornament. The working system is as follows:

**The camera**, as above.

**A lens in a leaf shutter.** Large-format lenses are mounted in their own shutters — a ring of blades inside the lens that provides both the timed speeds and the aperture. Lens and shutter are bought and serviced as a unit.

**A lens board**, the flat plate that mounts the shutter to the camera. Boards are cheap but specific: drilled for the shutter size, shaped for the camera.

**Film holders**, flat double-sided cassettes carrying two sheets each behind removable **dark slides**. Several are needed, and each must be clean and light-tight.

**A tripod and head** rigid enough to hold the camera still. The camera cannot be handheld in ordinary use. A tripod that flexes softens every negative made on it, and no lens can buy the sharpness back.

**A dark cloth**, to shade the glass so the image is visible, and a **loupe** to judge focus on it.

**A handheld light meter.**

**A cable release**, so the shutter fires without the hand shaking the camera.

**Film**, a **changing bag or darkroom** for loading it, boxes for exposed sheets, and a bag that carries all of the above.

**Processing and output** — a lab or your own chemistry, then a scanner, an enlarger, or contact prints.

None of this is exotic. But the list explains the most common false start in the format: the entire budget spent on a handsome camera that cannot, by itself, make a photograph. Plan on the body costing less than half of the real starting outlay.

## Three kinds of camera

For a beginner the choice is not among hundreds of models. It is among three forms.

**Monorail cameras** mount both standards on a straight rail. The construction gives the fullest range of movements, good precision, and simple repair, and because studios sold them off by the thousand, a used monorail is often the cheapest serious entry into the format. The same construction makes it heavy, bulky, and slow to pack. A monorail suits the studio table, work near the car, and the first year of learning on minimum money. It suits a trail badly.

**Field cameras** fold into a compact box and open on a hinged bed. Wooden and metal field cameras — used examples from the established Japanese makers, new ones from small builders in Britain and China — trade some movement range and some rigidity for portability. For landscape and general work outdoors, the movements they keep are usually the movements that get used. Most photographers who intend to work outside end up here.

**Press cameras**, the folding Graphics familiar from mid-century news photographs, are rugged, common, and often sold with a working lens for little money. Their movements are minimal. As a first camera, a press camera is a sturdy box with a lens rather than a full view camera — and for a photographer whose main interest is the big negative, that can be enough.

## Lenses, shutters, coverage

On 4×5, a 150mm lens is normal: its view approximates a 50mm lens on a 35mm camera. A 90mm is a moderate wide-angle; a 210mm, a moderate long lens. Dividing the focal length by three gives a rough 35mm equivalent.

The concept without a small-format parallel is the **image circle**. A lens projects a circle of usable image, and the film must lie inside it. When a standard rises or swings, the film moves toward the circle's edge; if the circle is small, the corners darken first, then blur. Coverage — how much larger the circle is than the film — determines how much movement a lens permits.

The shutter deserves equal attention. Most large-format lenses sit in leaf shutters of a few standardized sizes, and most of those shutters are decades old. Slow speeds drag. Blades pick up oil and hesitate. A shutter that has not been serviced may be a full stop off at its slow end while sounding perfectly healthy. Before trusting a used lens, have the shutter tested (there are tools available on eBay).

Compatibility is therefore more than a mount. The shutter must fit a board, the board must fit the camera, the image circle must cover the format with the movements intended, and the bellows must extend far enough to focus the lens — roughly the focal length for distant subjects, more for close ones, which is usually 150mm.

## The ground glass

The ground glass is a translucent screen sitting exactly where the film will sit. The lens projects onto it the image the film will receive: inverted, reversed, and in daylight dim enough that the photographer works under the dark cloth to see it at all.

The inversion disorients for an afternoon and then stops mattering. Something else replaces it. Stripped of its ordinary orientation, the scene on the glass reads as shapes, tones, and intervals rather than as subject matter, and compositional problems that hide in an eye-level finder show plainly. Composition can be aided by this quirk of the format. For example, in Betty Edwards’ Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain she provides an exercise early on where you copy from a drawing of Stravinsky, but upside down, in order to prove that our expectations often hinder our ability to see clearly.

One mechanical fact governs everything that follows: the glass and the film occupy the same plane, so they cannot be used at the same time. Focusing (corner to corner) and composing come first; then the film holder goes in, displacing the glass and placing a sheet of film where it stood. From that point the photographer is blind. Any change — a nudged tripod, second thoughts about the frame — means removing the holder and returning to the glass. Much of view-camera discipline is respect for that boundary.

## Movements

The standards of a view camera move, and the movements are what no rigid camera can do. There are five, in two families, and they do different work.

**Rise, fall, and shift** slide a standard up, down, or sideways without changing its angle. Their use is reframing without tipping the camera. The building is the standard example: point any camera upward and the verticals converge, because the film is no longer parallel to the wall. Keep the view camera level and raise the front standard instead, and the top of the building enters the frame while the film stays parallel and the verticals stay straight. The framing changes; the geometry does not.

**Tilt and swing** angle a standard forward and back, or side to side. On the front standard they move the plane of focus. A camera ordinarily focuses on a plane parallel to the film. Tilt the lens forward and that plane pivots down toward the ground. In a landscape, two or three degrees of forward tilt can lay the plane of sharp focus along a receding field, so the grass at the tripod and the ridge at the horizon are both sharp at a working aperture — a result stopping down alone cannot always reach. The limitation is built into the geometry: tilt sharpens what lies near a plane. A tree rising out of that field leaves the plane, and the photographer stops down for it or reconceives the photograph. On the rear standard, tilt and swing change the shapes of things — a correction when the photograph needs it, a distortion when it arrives uninvited.

Two cautions keep movements in proportion. Every movement pushes the film toward the edge of the image circle, so generous movements demand generous coverage. And movements are optional. The zeroed camera makes most photographs.

## Holders, slides, and film in the dark

Sheet film demands the least glamorous discipline in the format, and the most consequential, because the errors here happen in the dark and announce themselves weeks later.

Film goes into holders in total darkness — a light-tight room or a changing bag — each sheet sliding under the holder's guide rails, emulsion facing out. The manufacturer cuts notches into one edge of every sheet: held so the notches fall under the right thumb in the top corner, the emulsion faces the photographer. The notches are the only fact available in the dark, and the whole procedure hangs on them. Everyone practices first in daylight with a sacrificed sheet, then with eyes closed. The practice is not optional.

The handle of each dark slide has two distinguishable faces, one light and one dark. A widespread convention is that the light side out means unexposed film, dark side out means exposed. It is a convention and you can buck it, but adopt one rule and never departing from it, because a proper exposure depends on it. The format's most painful mistakes, the double-exposed sheet, the slide pulled on a photograph already made, are almost always a result of breaking this rule.

## The sequence of one exposure

Here is the format's heart: the order of operations for a single photograph. Equipment and habit vary the details; the shape is stable.

1. Set up — tripod planted, camera mounted, aimed and leveled, standards zeroed.
2. Open the shutter on its viewing setting, so the glass has an image.
3. Compose, under the cloth, first coarsely and then with the loupe.
4. Apply movements if the photograph needs them, then refocus — movements change focus.
5. Check the whole frame, corners included.
6. Decide whether the photograph needs a filter, and fit it. The decision belongs here — after focusing, since a deep filter darkens the glass, and before metering, since the filter changes the exposure.
7. Meter, and decide the exposure.
8. Apply the corrections that apply: bellows extension, filter factor, reciprocity.
9. Set the aperture and speed on the lens.
10. Close the shutter and cock it. The camera is now dark and armed; nothing more can be checked.
11. Seat the film holder, without shifting the camera.
12. Pull the dark slide.
13. Wait for the moment. Fire with the cable release.
14. Replace the slide, exposed side out.
15. Remove the holder and write the notes.

Read like this as a list it looks difficult, bureaucratic. In practice it only takes a few minutes and settles into a rhythm, and that rhythm is the safeguard. Nearly every ruined sheet in a beginner's first boxes is a sequence error: the slide pulled with the shutter still open for viewing, the holder seated before focus was final, the exposure made at the viewing aperture. A printed checklist in the camera bag is a good idea, especially with the rising cost of film.

## Three complications

**Bellows extension.** When the lens racks out to focus close, the same light spreads over a longer path and the film receives less of it. The rule: divide the bellows extension by the focal length and square the result. A 150mm lens focused at life size extends the bellows to about 300mm; 300 over 150 is 2; squared is 4\. The film needs four times the metered exposure — two stops. At ordinary distances the factor is too small to matter. Once the subject sits within a few focal lengths of the camera it is not, and the practical method is to measure the bellows draw and consult a table, not to derive anything in the field.

**Reciprocity failure.** Up to about a second, film responds to light in proportion. Beyond that, most emulsions fall behind, and a metered ten seconds may need twenty or more. Each film differs; the manufacturer's data sheet gives the corrections. Large-format work with slow film, small apertures, low light often meets this threshold earlier and more often than handheld photography does.

**The shutter itself.** Marked speeds are claims, not guarantees, and on old shutters the slow speeds usually run long. A tested shutter turns a mystery into a known correction; an untested one adds a variable to every exposure.

Filters add their marked factors on top. In black-and-white work the common case is a yellow or orange filter used to separate clouds from a blue sky; it costs its stop or two, and the metering must carry the cost. None of this is difficult. All of it rewards the same habit: one consistent metering method, and a moment of arithmetic before the slide comes out.

## Write it down

The notebook in the opening scene is part of the system. With twelve exposures in a day and days or weeks between exposing and seeing, memory fails exactly where it is needed: which sheet had the tilt, which holder was suspect, what the meter actually read. One note per sheet, holder number, subject, reading, aperture and speed, movements, corrections, anything odd, turns errors into lessons instead of mysteries.

The notes also open onto a benefit no roll-film camera can offer. A roll receives one development: every frame on it, whatever the light was, goes through the same developer for the same time. A sheet is developed alone (or in batches taken under similar conditions).

This is the working logic Ansel Adams formalized as the Zone System: expose for the shadow detail the photograph needs, develop for the highlights it must hold, and write the plan down so the darkroom can honor it. We have more to say on the Zone System and will return to it in future issues.

## After the shutter

The exposure is half the system. The other is processing and the simplest start is a lab that handles sheet film. It costs more per sheet than roll film and removes the darkroom entirely. The strong second option, for black and white, is developing your own. Sheet film is in some ways easier to self-process than roll film: in open trays in a genuinely dark room, or more forgivingly in daylight tanks that accept sheets, where only the loading happens in darkness.

For output, three realistic paths. Scanning is how most current work gets finished, and the big negative is forgiving: a capable flatbed handles 4×5 respectably, and copying negatives with a digital camera is now routine. Contact printing — the negative pressed to paper, exposed, developed — yields a finished 4×5-inch print with minimal equipment and is the cheapest complete loop in photography. Enlarging 4×5 requires a large-format enlarger and the space to house it, a commitment better deferred until the practice has proven itself.

## A first system

There is no single correct kit. There is a correct shape, and it is modest. One camera suited to where the work will happen — a used monorail for the studio and the learning year, a field camera for anything involving walking. One 150mm lens in a tested shutter. A tripod that does not move. Six to twelve holders, verified. Dark cloth, loupe, cable release, handheld meter. A box of forgiving black-and-white film — a 400-speed emulsion tolerates metering error and processes easily, and a changing bag.

Black-and-white sheet film is in healthy production from several manufacturers, with 4×5 the best-supplied sheet size and the range still growing; color survives at a real premium, but is stunning and provides a look that is unique to the format. New 4×5 cameras from small builders now start at prices that would have seemed implausible fifteen years ago, though the used market remains the value path for lenses and most of the rest.

## Who should start

Let’s return to the greenhouse. Ten minutes for one photograph is either a non-starter or an enticement, and which way it reads to you is most of the answer.

Large format will suit you if you want direct control over the plane of focus and the geometry of the frame; if individual negatives matter to you more than volume; if routine is something you can inhabit rather than merely endure; if returning to, and learning from, the fundamentals of photography is important to you.

If the intent is still there, borrow or rent a camera for a weekend before buying anything, or find a photographer who will let you under the cloth. An hour on the ground glass answers more than any guide, this one included. There is no shame in admitting that slowing down is a nice concept but not for you. But if you made it this far, and the inverted image beckons to you, try starting used, with one lens, and count the first boxes of film as tuition. The greenhouse will keep. The light comes back every morning.
