Plustek's OpticFilm 9000i Ai is now on sale at American retailers. The company announced it on 4 December and showed it at Imaging USA in Nashville in January, beside the OpticFilm 120 Pro, which takes 35mm and 120, and the OpticFilm 135i Ai, which adds panoramic film and one-touch batch scanning.
The 9000i Ai is the 35mm machine. Plustek gives it a true optical resolution of 7200 dpi at 48 bits, a third-generation lens module of five glass elements, and calibration on five axes at the factory. An infrared channel feeds SilverFast's iSRD dust and scratch removal. The company says the series runs up to 38 percent faster than the 8200i it replaces. SilverFast Ai Studio, Plustek's QuickScan Plus, and an IT8 calibration target are in the box, and it works with 64-bit Windows and macOS 10.14 or later.
Karen Ku, Plustek's vice-president of sales, set the line against the assumption usually made about who buys film scanners: "It is not about nostalgia, it is about performance."
Two qualifications belong with that specification. A nominal optical resolution describes the optics and the sensor pitch; it is not a measurement of what the scanner resolves on a negative, and the two figures are seldom the same. No independent test of the 9000i Ai had appeared at the time of writing.
And Plustek publishes no price. The scanner is listed at US retailers, so what it sells for there is the only number available to go on.
